&#60;title&#62;Kitsap Community Food Co-op Monthly Update: August&#60;/title&#62;
&#60;/head&#62;
&#60;body&#62;

Dear Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

As I was digging through my email today, searching on the word &#34;tomato,&#34; I came across an old email that stopped me in my tracks. It was from our dear friend and baker Luigi Ferrari, sent to me two years ago this month. Luigi tragically passed away just over one year ago. As many of you knew, he was an avid supporter both of local food and of our emerging co-op. I want to share that letter in its entirety with you today. There is so much I could say here about Luigi, but I will let his own words speak for himself. I don't think I ever responded to his email except to thank him in person, and now that he is gone, I wish I had taken the time to more carefully sift through the words of wisdom he has to say here and respond to him in a more thoughtful manner. This is a lesson to me -- and I hope to all of us -- about never taking anything or anyone for granted, and to celebrate the unique spirit we each bring to our community every day. I hope you all enjoy what he has to say, an
d take as much from it as I did.  &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Cooperatively,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

________________________&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Subject: 	&#34;What is your most important question about local food in Kitsap?&#34;&#60;br&#62;&#60;/b&#62;
Date: 	August 12, 2008 2:13:50 PM PDT&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I should let you know sooner rather than later, that I have never actually been in a modern food co-op, though I grew-up living in ad-hoc co-ops and much of my knowledge is antiquated, and may not be relevant to this or even the last century.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

My father and his three brothers immigrated to this country and like many immigrant families lived cooperatively out of necessity.  Between the brothers there were a gaggle of children who were “Jobbed-out” for whatever tasks were in season.  A literal labor-ready pool.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

The brothers had their specialized talents and the labors and fruits were shared amongst all of us:&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Antonio the carpenter made things from nothing.  Houses, barns, chicken coops, pergolas.  I remember spending a summer lifting one of the brother’s houses to dig a wine cellar under it.  We first had to plant trees to prevent any prying eyes from inspecting such an undertaking.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Felice, was the farmer and fisherman who tilled crops for animal feed which we rendered into fresh and cured meats, cheeses, and more compost than you could imagine.  A small fruit orchard and the tastiest vinegars and cheeses I ever ate.  We went to the ice house and filled a truck with ice then packed fresh meat in it and sold it next to the check-cashing trailer at the gates of the auto plants on paydays.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Guseppi, the master butcher, wine maker and vegetable gardener grows the most amazing fruits and vegetables you ever saw, oh and the prochutto, salumi, and sausages.  I get dizzy just thinking about it, and this is before even tasting his home brews…&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Paulino, the mechanic did his best to keep tractors, cars, computers, huskers, thrashers, mowers, shellers, and everything mechanical running.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I’ll spare you the mind spinning talents the wives of these men had laboring at their sides…&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We bought animal feed from farm co-ops, we augmented our food supply by exchanging labor for excess production from local farmers, and foraged like rabbits for everything from asparagus to Zepoli (From bakery dumpsters). Picking, canning, curing, picking, pasta making, blacksmithing…   These were all cooperative things.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

So with that, here is the letter I drafted, but have not posted. And the link to what I suppose is more of a farmer/producer co op.  They have a farm, store, bakery and restaurant at the farm where they sell products produced locally: http://www.gatheringtogetherfarm.com/farmstore.html   I suppose it is what I think of when I daydream…   Producers building the infrastructure, investing in delivering what they do best and selling the shares to the consumers.  Sort of a bricks and mortar CSA scheme.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Here is the response I drafted to the question:  &#34;What is your most important question about local food in Kitsap?&#34;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I suppose that my question contains echoes the previous, How do I get my hands on locally grown food.  I am actually a food producer in the area and am at farm markets all week, but still I long for the days when I could get veggies from the farm.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I seem to be able to get small boxes of even smaller portions of veggies through a CSA program, and I do from time to time bring home a bag of lettuce from the farm markets, but the sort of produce I can not seem to get my hands on here in Kitsap are the bushels of tomatoes for canning, or peppers, boxes full of eggplant for canning, beans for freezing or fruit.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

All I seem to be able to get are those portion sizes meant for a meal, a bunch of lettuce or handful of greens, and purchasing in this way is cost prohibitive and frankly just a tease to my taste buds.  I was raised to eat and to preserve what is in season right now.  When in grocery stores, I use a simple rule of thumb, $.99 or less = abundant = in season, but there seems to be no analogue in the modern farm markets.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Now do not think me a cheapskate, I do grow many of my own veggies and am well aware the true cost of quality (local, well grown, and fresh) produce and do not mind paying a premium for it, but to make it work I need to be able to get enough of that produce to fill my freezer or pantry for the year not just the season or the week and for my favorite foods I seem to have trouble filling my pot. For example, I grow some 20 lbs of garlic each year and every spring before the fresh greens of a new crop breaks the ground, I begin to panic and to ration my precious bulbs in fear that the new season will be delayed or worse. As it is, I manage to get about 50% of my veggies in season (June-Sept) from local producers but not nearly enough to squirrel away this premium produce for the long and dark months in between. This means that 87.5% of my annual produce budget is “left on the table” and is doomed to some multi-national, and 87.5% of my food needs are dependent on the national
 food production and delivery infrastructure.  &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

How do we turn the tables of this equation?  What needs to happen to make us 87.5% independent of imported foods? &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I realize that this &#34;preserve it yourself&#34; mentality makes me something of a throwback, but I think that it is a part of what makes local agriculture work.  Not feeding people today, or June-Sept, but feeding people.  And an important component of local agriculture is to help people learn how to shop, how to make the harvest last, and how with just a little value-add, a jar of tomatoes goes from a $.99 commodity in a chain supermarket into a treasure, and a priceless heirloom.  My family literally has preserved foods from loved ones past not for eating, but as a symbol of the love that went into the foraging, preparation and preservation of the foods and the love of life and family behind the labors.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

So, I guess that my question is: How do we teach the “Consumer” to consume more in harmony with the seasons and to preserve foods to take advantage of the flood of seasonal abundance, in order to better sustain the farmers who take the time to produce the foods we so desperately need:  Food storage training and tools at farm markets?  An investment in a local cooperative food processing industry? Cold storage facilities at the farms?  How do we teach the value of this labor of love?&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

A favorite saying is:  If you are not preparing your food for yourself, you are outsourcing the most essential human need you have and generally to the lowest bidder.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Cheers,&#60;br&#62;
Luigi Ferrari&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Calling all cooperators -- KCFC Needs You!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;/b&#62;

Are you seeking a fun, meaningful, low-commitment volunteer opportunity? Looking to connect with more people in your community? You're in luck! The Kitsap Community Food Co-op is seeking new volunteer blood for our 2010 events, specifically for our Fall Fair on October 2 of this year. Last year we were short on hands at our event, making it harder on those hardworking folks who help us out year after year. We could really use your help this year!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

If you volunteered in the past, but haven't had contact in awhile, we would love to get reacquainted with you, and to invite you to meet all the new people who are involved with our effort. Volunteering at events is fun and social, and you'll probably get fed some good food along the way, too.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

How do you do it? It's simple!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Come sit with us at any KCFC Farmers Market booth between now and September to &#34;learn the ropes.&#34; Come for an hour, or stay for the entire market -- you know you'll be there anyway! &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Reply to this email to let us know you are interested, and we'll bring an extra chair for you to our next event in your area!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Call for &#34;Real Food&#34; Silent Auction Items&#60;br&#62;
To benefit KCFC at our next Public Meeting on Sept. 12&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;/b&#62;

Kitsap Food Co-Op's 6th Semi-Annual Public Meeting will be held on Sunday, September 12, and will include a Silent Auction. Our theme this meeting is &#34;Real Food,&#34; and we are seeking food and food-related items to auction off.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We are looking for items worth $25 or more OR beautifully-handmade food items (including the plate!) which can be carried away by hand (no cast-iron stoves, please). If you work for a food-related business, we'd love it if you would consider asking your employer if they'd be willing to donate goods, services or a gift certificate.  Please email a description, the current location of the item, a photo (if possible) to Lenore Burke at &#38;#x6C;&#38;#x65;&#38;#110;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x72;&#38;#x65;&#38;#111;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#101;&#38;#64;&#38;#x6D;&#38;#97;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x2E;&#38;#99;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x6D; and we'll make arrangements to pick it up from you. Your donation will help to raise some money and draw new people and potential members to the co-op who have not attended a public meeting in the past. &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We will also need volunteers to help with this event -- respond to this email or call 360-813-1301 if you are interested helping with setup, selling memberships, or providing food and beverages.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

		 <title>Bremerton Urban Hens Needs Your Help</title>
		 <link>http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/general/20100713081104/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
Calling all Cluckers!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
As many of you may know, the movement to legalize backyard hens in Bremerton been working hard to get enough signatures to get a Citizens Initiative on the ballot by this fall or next spring. They are about halfway through their goal, and need your help to get the rest of the signatures. They extend their hand now to ask you to become comrades-in-arms to help the legalizing of backyard hens in Bremerton. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
If you care about local &#38;amp; sustainable food, here or anywhere, you must act now. You may need to be a Bremerton voter to sign the initiative, but you do not need to be one to help! The following are ways you can help this issue stay alive:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
- Come to a signature gathering event on August 1st, 1 pm at Seaside Church in Bremerton.&#60;br /&#62;
- Come to the next City Council meeting on July 21st, and &#60;br /&#62;
- Write to the Bremerton City Council before or after the meeting. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
More details about each on attached flyer.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Also, please distribute the attached flyer widely -- email to your friends, your affinity groups, run off copies and hand out at church, the Farmers Market, anywhere you go. The people must rise up for this issue to succeed!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Updates: You CAN Can: Preserving The Harvest &#38; Call for Poulsbo Volunteers</title>
		 <link>http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/general/20100709090718/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
Hi Cooperators,&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
I wanted to let you know about a really exciting opportunity to learn about food preservation here in Kitsap County. Shannon Harkness of the WSU Extension Office in Bremerton is hosting a series of classes titled, &#38;quot;Preserving The Harvest.&#38;quot; In them, she teaches different food preservation techniques, such as Jamming, Pickling, and Pressure Canning! The classes begin this Saturday, July 17th and run once a month on Saturdays through October. All classes are to be held at the Silverdale Community Center&#38;#146;s Evergreen Room, and the cost is $30 per class, or any four classes for $100. Check out the attached flyer for more details, or call (360) 337-7157 or email &#60;a href=&#34;mailto:&#38;#x73;&#38;#104;&#38;#x61;&#38;#110;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#111;&#38;#110;&#38;#46;&#38;#x68;&#38;#97;&#38;#x72;&#38;#107;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#115;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#x77;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x75;&#38;#46;&#38;#x65;&#38;#100;&#38;#117;&#34;&#62;&#38;#x73;&#38;#104;&#38;#x61;&#38;#110;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#111;&#38;#110;&#38;#46;&#38;#x68;&#38;#97;&#38;#x72;&#38;#107;&#38;#x6E;&#38;#x65;&#38;#115;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x40;&#38;#x77;&#38;#x73;&#38;#x75;&#38;#46;&#38;#x65;&#38;#100;&#38;#117;&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
On a side note, these classes are a perfect opportunity for those of you who order bulk fruit from Rob Story through the co-op, or for those who have wanted to but didn't know what to do with all that fruit! (By the way, the next deadline for orders is tonight, Friday July 9, 8 pm! Go to www.allonefamilyfarm.com for more information.) &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Finally, we received some great responses to our call for volunteers last week, but we are still seeking more! We will be at the Poulsbo Farmers Market tomorrow, so if you want to volunteer, or just find out more about the co-op, come on out and find our booth and sit with us for a spell. The weather should be nice and pleasant tomorrow, in the mid to high 70s. What a perfect day to come to market! We'll only be at each market once per month though, so if you live in the Poulsbo area, this is your only chance in July to catch us there. Hope we see your smiling faces.&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Kitsap Community Food Co-op Call for Volunteers</title>
		 <link>http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/general/20100702101606/</link>
		 <description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
Calling all cooperators!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Are you seeking a fun, meaningful, low-commitment volunteer opportunity? Looking to connect with more people in your community? You're in luck! The Kitsap Community Food Co-op is seeking new volunteer blood for our 2010 events, specifically for our Fall Fair on October 2 of this year. Last year we were short on hands at our event, making it harder on those hardworking folks who help us out year after year. We could really use your help this year!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
If you volunteered in the past, but haven't had contact in awhile, we would love to get reacquainted with you, and to invite you to meet all the new people who are involved with our effort. Volunteering at events is fun and social, and you'll probably get fed some good food along the way, too. &#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
How do you do it? It's simple!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Come sit with us at any KCFC Farmers Market booth between now and September to &#38;quot;learn the ropes.&#38;quot;  Come for an hour, or stay for the entire market -- you know you'll be there anyway! Here's our schedule of when we'll be at your local Farmers Market:&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Poulsbo Farmers Market: Sat., July 10, 9 am - 1 pm (Continuing 2nd Saturdays through Sept)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Bremerton Farmers Market: Thurs., July 15, 4 - 7 pm (Continuing 3rd Thursdays through Sept)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Port Orchard Farmers Market: Sat., July 24, 9 am - 3 pm (Continuing 4th Saturdays through Sept)&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
Reply to this email to let us know when you plan to attend, and we'll bring an extra chair for you!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;

		 <title>Kitsap Community Food Co-op Monthly Update: July</title>

&#60;title&#62;Kitsap Community Food Co-op Monthly Update: July&#60;/title&#62;
&#60;/head&#62;
&#60;body&#62;

Dear Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Our official member count is 110 as of today.&#60;/b&#62; While this is a great start, we still have a long way to go -- we still need 90 more members to make our goals this year. &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I've been thinking a lot about membership over the past few months, why some people who I would never expect have joined our co-op in these early stages -- those who aren't in the &#34;local food scene,&#34; those who are unemployed or can least afford it, those in the military and have access to the commissary. And then there are those who I thought would join right away who still have not joined -- those who I pass every week at the Farmers Market, those who have been our cheerleaders from the beginning, those who are &#34;local foodies,&#34; even those who might be potential suppliers. And it makes me wonder: &#60;b&#62;What makes someone join an emerging co-op, or not? Is our area different than other areas?&#60;/b&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I know all co-ops struggle in the beginning to get folks to make the leap of faith necessary to join at first. &#60;b&#62;&#34;But we don't know where it will be,&#34; &#60;/b&#62;(You can get your &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Member_Owner_101.html&#34;&#62;money back&#60;/a&#62; if it is too far away.) &#60;b&#62;&#34;I can't afford it.&#34;&#60;/b&#62; (We have &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/How_To_Join.html&#34;&#62;payment plans &#60;/a&#62; where you can join for as little as $35 to start, and we also allow you to use your &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Online_Payment.html&#34;&#62;credit card &#60;/a&#62;for no additional fee.) &#60;b&#62;&#34;We don't know if this effort / these people will make it,&#34;&#60;/b&#62; or &#60;b&#62;&#34;I'll wait until opening day,&#34; &#34;Why are they taking so long?&#34;&#60;/b&#62; These are some of the comments I either hear directly or through the grapevine that people who haven't joined yet are saying. To the first two comments, the answers are easy. To the others, the answers are a bit more difficult, which is what I want to write about today.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

One thing I observed when I first began holding co-op meetings was a deep level of cynicism from some people. And this was coming from those who would be our greatest supporters, those who had enough faith to come to an organizational meeting. Now that I've been here almost 3 years, I understand that those of us in Kitsap County have every right to be cynical. It isn't easy to be a local business owner here. I personally have seen dozens of businesses close, many that I frequented often. I've mourned seeing friends' business ventures fail. I see the empty buildings -- entire city blocks -- of commercial units that once created a vibrant city I can only imagine. People here are wary (and weary) of being hopeful. &#60;b&#62;Being hopeful, as many of us have been learned in Kitsap County, is a dangerous emotion to feel. It means being disappointed when a beautiful idea or shop we love goes away.&#60;/b&#62; The bigger the idea, the bigger the disappointment. So it's easier to think that what we
 do doesn't make a difference in the big scheme of things, and take our canvas bags and our dollars over to the natural foods isle at Fred Meyer's and not think too much more about it.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;But this is not always the case in Kitsap County.&#60;/b&#62; Sometimes, a brilliant idea turns into a brilliant business that revives a community. Here are some of my favorite examples, all thriving: Hi-Lo's 15th Street Cafe (Bremerton), The 15th Street Bakery (Bremerton), Monica's Waterfront Bakery &#38; Cafe (Silverdale), FreshLocal (Bremerton), Cosmo's (Port Orchard), Amy's on the Bay (Port Orchard), the Bremerton Farmers Market (in its 3rd year as a WA State Market!), Isella Day Spa (Bremerton), Terra Zen Salon (Bremerton), CJ's Evergreen Market (Bremerton), and The Hi-Fidelity Lounge (Bremerton). I could go on and on -- and please forgive me if I didn't mention your business. All of these are locally owned neighborhood businesses that started out as a glimmer of a great idea and someone who had enough faith and gumption to make it happen. The only difference between these stores and ours is 1) We've got a bigger budget; and 2) We need more people to have faith in this idea to ma
ke it happen.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I know it is easy to be cynical in these tough economic times, especially where we live. We are used to hard times, to doing with less, to being deprived of what we want in our communities. But I know one thing for sure -- &#60;b&#62;cynicism is not going to bring more local and sustainably-raised food to Kitsap County. It's not going to help build a co-op.&#60;/b&#62; Waiting to join until opening day means we may not open at all. I'm asking you all now to consciously choose to temporarily suspend your cynicism, and to instead embrace Hopefulness. To be hopeful that we can change our neighborhoods, that we will soon gain access to better food here, that we can generate wealth by keeping our dollars in our county, to be hopeful that this effort WILL work and the people who are dedicating their time to it are smart and capable and passionate. Embrace Hope. What is the worst that can happen? Disappointment. But if you choose to embrace Cynicism instead, what is the best that can happen? Nothin
g.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I'll end with a saying I had on a postcard stuck on my wall in my 20s, which has (thankfully) stuck in my head all these years: &#60;b&#62;&#34;If you are very, very careful in life, nothing very, very bad or very, very good will ever happen to you.&#34; &#60;/b&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;title&#62;Kitsap Community Food Co-op Update Email: June&#60;/title&#62;
&#60;/head&#62;
&#60;body&#62;

Hi Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

It's time for us to update you on our monthly happenings. We have lots of things &#34;in the works&#34; at the moment, and this is an exciting time for our co-op -- feels like things are really gathering speed and momentum as we get closer to our store.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

First, a member count. &#60;b&#62;As of today, we have 104 official member-owners!&#60;/b&#62; A huge thank you to everyone who has joined us so far as a Founding Member of the co-op. Did you know that once we open the store, all member-owners who joined in the beginning of our effort will be featured on a plaque in the store? Also, did you know that if you join our co-op today you can begin to receive discounts at other food co-ops around the nation? It's true! These are all great reasons for joining, but the most important reason to join today is so that we can have a community-owned grocery store in Kitsap County. There are no guarantees we will at this point -- we still haven't reached our goals. I hope you will take that leap of faith with us soon and become a member-owner. We literally cannot do it without you.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Other new things on the horizon --&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;We have a newly redesigned website!&#60;/b&#62; Check it out: www.kitsapfoodcoop.org. The site contains much of the same content as before, but we have added a few new pages -- a &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Media_%26_PR.html&#34;&#62;&#34;Media &#38; PR&#34;&#60;/a&#62; page that links to news articles we've been mentioned in, our Blog has been more appropriately titled &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/News_%26_Updates/News_%26_Updates.html&#34;&#62;&#34;News &#38; Updates,&#34;&#60;/a&#62;  and we are the most excited about our new &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Online_Payment.html&#34;&#62;&#34;Online Payment&#34;&#60;/a&#62; page that includes instructions for how you can apply and pay completely online! If you aren't familiar with our website, we encourage you to poke around in it, click on the links, and soon you will understand exactly who we are and what we are doing, and hopefully find out a little more about food co-ops in the process.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Also, &#60;b&#62;we begin our Farmers Market season next week&#60;/b&#62; with our first appearance at the Poulsbo Farmers Market on June 12, followed by the Bremerton Farmers Market on June 17, and the Port Orchard Farmers Market on June 26. Come visit us and if you decide to sign up as a member at the booth, we have a new incentive for you: A free piece of co-op merchandise! See item below for details.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Finally, we are actively scouting and touring potential sites, some of which have appeared in the news, but at this point we are too early in the process to have made any firm commitments. The most important thing we will need before we can commit is more members, at least 200 by the end of this year. But there are some very exciting possibilities out there for us, some of which are really hopeful and surprising and make me want to go shopping at our new co-op tomorrow! &#60;b&#62;One thing we are working on in the meantime is getting some visualizations of what our store will look like, based on board vision and our budget.&#60;/b&#62; I would expect to see these on our site and in our market booth sometime this summer, so you can get the first glimpse of what &#34;your store&#34; will look like. Stay tuned.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;title&#62;Kitsap Community Food Co-op Monthly Update: May&#60;/title&#62;
&#60;/head&#62;
&#60;body&#62;

Dear Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

The busy summer market and fair season is upon us, and we are gearing up for all the events we usually attend. This year, we are treating our market and fair presence a little differently than in the past two years -- we are offering memberships for sale at every event we attend! That means, you can purchase your co-op membership using a check, money order, cash or credit card, and you will be issued a member number and card on the spot. In addition, we are cooking up some great incentives and contests for members who join at one of our booth events. Check out our website for our most recent events, and a &#34;temperature gauge&#34; of how we're doing in our memberships. &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;&#60;u&#62;Where to find us next:&#60;br&#62;&#60;/u&#62;&#60;/b&#62;
&#60;b&#62;Poulsbo Farmers Market:&#60;/b&#62; Sat., June 12, 9 am - 1 pm (Continuing 2nd Saturdays through Sept)&#60;br&#62;
&#60;b&#62;Bremerton Farmers Market:&#60;/b&#62; Thurs., June 17, 4 - 7 pm (Continuing 3rd Thursdays through Sept)&#60;br&#62;
&#60;b&#62;Port Orchard Farmers Market:&#60;/b&#62; Sat., June 26, 9 am - 3 pm (Continuing 4th Saturdays through Sept)&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;u&#62;&#60;b&#62;NEW! Special offer for members who join at a booth event only:&#60;/b&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;/u&#62;
We are offering a free piece of co-op merchandise of your choice! Choose between: Handmade tea towel apron, Eco-bag canvas lunchbag, Eco-bag cotton produce bag, stainless steel water bottle, tote bag, and more to be added throughout the season. For every membership bought in full ($200), you may choose any item from the booth, plus you save the $10 admin fee. That's up to a $35 value! For those who choose a payment plan (either $35 or $60 for the first payment), you may choose any item valued at $10 or less. What a deal!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;u&#62;&#60;b&#62;One last great reason to join now:&#60;br&#62;&#60;/b&#62;&#60;/u&#62;
We will soon be choosing a final name for the store, and asking for our members' help in naming it! In case you haven't guessed, the name &#34;Kitsap Community Food Co-op&#34; was a name we chose for the organizing effort, but we wanted to give our member/owners a real sense of ownership by allowing them to choose what the name of the store ends up being (which may or may not be our current name). Only members will be eligible to participate in the naming of the co-op, and we will be choosing a name soon, stay tuned for more details.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Hope to see you at a KCFC booth this summer!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Greeting Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

I thought I'd send a message out about this wonderful opportunity I just found out about in Seattle. For anyone interested in urban farming &#38; agriculture, this sounds like a great event to go to.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Thanks to Jaime Forsyth of Bremerton Greendrinks for letting us know about this!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

_____________________________________________________________&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Greetings!&#60;br&#62;
We are a group of University of Washington students studying architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning who are interested in the connection between Seattle's vibrant urban food movement and the design professions.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We've been inspired by the Mayor's recent &#34;Year of Urban Agriculture&#34; declaration, by the City Council's Local Food Action Initiative resolution and, moreover, by the tremendous on-going grassroots activism and community-based work happening across our city. In sum, we are eager to join you in co-creating a just and resilient urban food system.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

And... we are delighted to invite you to participate in a two-part event to explore the role of the design professions in our city's urban food movement -- an evening panel discussion + reception followed by an all-day design charrette (like a big brainstorm!) the next day -- hosted by the UW College of Built Environments. www.caup.washington.edu/Events/eventdetail.php?eventid=517&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Here’s the itinerary: &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;u&#62;&#60;b&#62;Panel Discussion and Charrette Launch/Reception &#60;/u&#62;&#60;br&#62;

6:00pm – 7:45pm Architecture Hall, Rm 147&#60;/b&#62;&#60;br&#62;

The evening panel will begin with a studio presentation and discussion on the role of design in the urban food movement. Introducing the panel presentation will be faculty members Branden Born, Ken Yocom, and Gundula Proksch to discuss their leadership of the winter studio on vertical farms for Yesler Terrace in Seattle, Washington. The panel will bring together a dynamic group of designers, activists, and thinkers. Jason King, ASLA CLARB LEED AP is the Principal of TERRA.fluxus LLC and blogger from Portland, Oregon. Debra Guenther ASLA LEED AP is a Principal at Mithun, Keith McPeeters is a Principal at Gustafson, Guthrie, Nichol, and Jeff Hou is the Chair of landscape architecture at the University of Washington, College of Built Environments. A reception and launch for the charette will take place in Gould Court immediately following the panel discussion.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Questions? &#38;#x75;&#38;#119;&#38;#x75;&#38;#114;&#38;#x62;&#38;#97;&#38;#110;&#38;#x66;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#100;&#38;#x40;&#38;#103;&#38;#109;&#38;#97;&#38;#x69;&#38;#x6C;&#38;#46;&#38;#x63;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#x6D;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Who should come?&#60;/b&#62; YOU! Anyone with an interest in urban food systems... in other words, anyone who eats! ...teachers, students, gardeners, neighborhood leaders, social justice activists, environmentalists, chefs, health care professionals, designers, parents, grandparents, children, visionaries, dreamers, doers, questioners, collaborators.... YOU.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Can I come to the charrette at any time during the day?&#60;/b&#62; YES. There will be docents to help you get oriented.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;How long should I plan on staying at the charrette?&#60;/b&#62; Plan on at least a half hour.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;b&#62;Will there be FOOD?&#60;/b&#62; Light snacks and coffee/tea will be provided throughout the day.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

The charrette is organized around ten different stations, each presenting a unique set of constraints/opportunities and challenging us to visualize new approaches to &#34;designing for urban food.&#34; Ranging from the scale of residential alleys, boulevard medians and single-family homes to larger-scale redevelopment projects and city-planning &#38; policy questions, the charrette scenarios will invite you express your bold vision for the future of our urban food system. Design ideas will be digitized and indexed following the charrette and will be made available to the public via http://cbeurbanfood.wordpress.com/. Further distillation and sharing mechanisms will be identified to continue the conversation. Our aspiration is that the work generated at the charrette will be supportive of and useful to a variety of neighborhood-based and city-wide efforts such as, &#34;Spring Into Bed&#34;, which aims to establish 100 edible landscapes (including 10 food justice) gardens in one single day, later
this spring! See: www.springintobed.org&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We're very much looking forward to meeting you and in advance of that, we thank you for all that you do ~&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Sincerely, &#60;br&#62;
&#34;Designing for Food&#34; Planning Team&#60;br&#62; &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

&#60;title&#62;Kitsap Community Food Co-op Monthly Update: April&#60;/title&#62;
&#60;/head&#62;
&#60;body&#62;

&#60;i&#62;Please forgive us if you've received this message more than once. Please disregard our previous messages due to some important corrections &#38; additions to this one.&#60;/i&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Dear Cooperators,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

We are proud to announce our new partner in our efforts to bring a natural foods, full service grocery store to the Kitsap County region. K-Mart has recently sent our Board of Directors an offer to open a store in conjunction with a new corporate effort they have toward selling local food, and we have gratefully accepted! This means that, for a generous payout offered to our Board of Directors to dissolve our effort, we will be receiving all the resources that K-Mart has to offer to build a brand new store, just for you, in the newly closed K-Mart store on Warren Ave. K-Mart has not named the store yet, but we are assured it will make all our former member-owners happy, something along the lines of &#34;K-Mart Mart.&#34; We'll be returning all member equity to you over the next few weeks, and entrusting all future decisions and direction of the store to the executives in Troy, MI, who will undoubtedly do a fantastic job of satisfying our local farmers, our community, and YOU!&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Are you as excited as we are about our new store? &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

...No?&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Well, thank goodness it's April Fools Season. (Huge, collective sigh of relief.) Don't worry, we haven't sold out to K-Mart. We are still here, we are still your Board of Directors, and we are still working hard to build our community owned store.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

In fact, we are making great headway this year, and are already nearly halfway toward reaching our membership goal of 200 members by the end of 2010! We're planning a number of membership drives now -- our first one has just gone out in the mail, so some of you may be receiving one of our member brochures at the moment. If you do receive one of these, this is where you can read about the benefits of membership, and it also contains a member application you can fill out and mail in with your payment to become a member-owner today. You can also do the same on our website at http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Member_Owner_101.html and http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Membership.html. More membership drives to come! If you think you can help us collect memberships in your area, send an email to &#38;#x6D;&#38;#101;&#38;#x6D;&#38;#98;&#38;#x65;&#38;#114;&#38;#115;&#38;#x40;&#38;#x6B;&#38;#105;&#38;#x74;&#38;#x73;&#38;#97;&#38;#x70;&#38;#x66;&#38;#111;&#38;#x6F;&#38;#100;&#38;#x63;&#38;#111;&#38;#111;&#38;#x70;&#38;#46;&#38;#111;&#38;#114;&#38;#103; and we'll get you involved. And if you can't become a member at this time, or are already a member, please send along the brochure to someone you know who might want to
get involved.&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Hope we didn't give you too much of a fright this April Fool's Day. &#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Cooperatively,&#60;br&#62;&#60;br&#62;

Hi Cooperators,&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
We have another event coming up, which is a fun way to support the co-op while enjoying a delicious local meal.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
On Saturday March 6 (this weekend!) from 11 am - 5 pm, Cosmo's Ristorante &#38;amp; Deli in Port Orchard will be donating 30% of their sales directly to the co-op! So come out everyone, their food is locally made, delicious and very Italian. They even have delicious meals to go in their Deli.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
We'll be there to answer your questions about membership and more. Hope to see you there!&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;br /&#62;
